Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett breaks ground on hope

Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett is a private, not-for-profit school located on Davis Road in Lawrenceville, GA. We serve students ranging in age from two through adult with varying developmental disabilities. Many of our graduates attend college, enter the workforce and are productive members of our community. Our teachers understand the students and know how to work with each student’s individual needs.

WHY WE EXIST:
Many students with special needs do not thrive in public schools. We exist for our students, and our classes are designed to meet their individual needs. Our goal is for all children to reach their potential in social, academics, language and motor skills while gaining independence and developing an “I can” attitude toward life and learning.

WHAT WE’RE DOING:
We plan to build a new facility on our current 7.4-acre property on Davis Road in Lawrenceville, Georgia. This project will be developed in four phases and will replace two aging homes that are currently used as classrooms and administrative areas and two temporary classroom trailers. The existing physical two older homes and two leased trailers have a maximum capacity of 50 students – SNS is currently at capacity. Phase One – construction of a sewer line to replace the existing septic tanks. Phase One was completed in February 2018. Phase Two – construction of a school building that houses 7 classrooms, two therapy rooms, offices, lunchroom, and lobby/reception area as well as site work, parking, design costs, retention pond expansion, and renovation of existing building for a Young Adult program. This phase which will increase capacity from 50 students to 80 students is currently under construction with a projected completion date in the 2019/2020 school year. Phase Three will include the addition of 14 classrooms to increase capacity from 80 students to 200 students as well as lunchroom expansion, two white calming rooms, and covered walkways connecting the Phase Two building to the Phase Three buildings. Phase Four will include constructing a multipurpose building and activities room that will accommodate therapy treatment, physical education activities, school program activities, and community events.

WHAT’S NEXT:
SNS Gwinnett is requesting donations to fully fund the four phase construction of a new school facility. SNS’s Board and Fundraising Committee members are currently working to raise the $2.13 million needed to fund Phase Two of the capital project. The Phase Two project will be completed by January 2019. With this new school, SNS will be able to accommodate 80 students with special needs. Once all four phases of construction of the capital project have been completed, SNS expects to accommodate 200 students.
