The Georgia General Assembly convened this week for legislative days 19 and 20, reaching the halfway point of the 40-day legislative session. Legislators will return to the Capitol next week for Legislative Days 21 through 24. Crossover Day, the last day in which a legislation can pass from one chamber to the other to continue being considered, is Tuesday, March 15. Sine Die, the last day of session is Monday, April 4.
On Monday, Governor Kemp signed SB 369 (Nonpartisan Gwinnett School Board) into law. The elections for School Board will be held in May instead of November. Districts 2 and 4 will be on the ballot, currently held by Steve Knudsen and Everton Blair respectively. Blair is not seeking reelection as he is running for State School Superintendent. Steve Knudsen is running for reelection.
HB 872 (Gwinnett Board of Education District Maps) and HB 873 (Gwinnett County Commission District Maps) were also signed by the Governor. The new district maps for both school boards and commissioners are attached.
On Wednesday, U.S. Representative Carolyn Bourdeaux hosted a roundtable discussion on her bill, Workforce Opportunity for Returning Citizens (WORC) Act that aims to tackle both the labor and recidivism challenges. Adam Forrand, VP of Education, Talent and Leadership Development represented the Gwinnett Chamber.
