The Atlanta Regional Commission’s Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Anna Roach, took center stage at the Gwinnett Chamber’s On Topic Luncheon, presented by Porter Steel held on February 21, 2024, at the 1818 Club. In her address, Roach shed light on the region’s trajectory, focusing on crucial updates to the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), population growth forecasts, and notable leadership changes within the ARC.
A significant highlight of Roach’s address was the ARC Board’s recent approval of a comprehensive update to the Metropolitan Transportation Plan. This groundbreaking initiative allocates $168 billion in federal, state, and local funding through 2050 to enhance transportation infrastructure and safety across the expansive 20-county region. With transportation being a pivotal aspect of economic development and quality of life, this ambitious plan sets the stage for sustainable growth and prosperity in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Addressing the region’s burgeoning population and economic landscape, Roach unveiled projections that underscored the Atlanta metropolitan area’s pivotal role in shaping the future of the Southeast. According to forecasts released by the Atlanta Regional Commission, the population of the 21-county Atlanta region is slated to soar to 7.9 million by 2050, marking a substantial increase of 1.8 million over the 2020 U.S. Census baseline. This growth, fueled by the robust regional economy, is projected to see the addition of 856,000 jobs by 2050, reaching a total of 4.6 million. These forecasts, updated every four years, serve as vital inputs for the Metropolitan Transportation Plan, guiding strategic investments to accommodate the evolving needs of metro Atlanta. Roach was also not remiss in noting Gwinnett’s leading position within the region for rapid population growth. This accolade underscores Gwinnett’s status as a dynamic hub of growth and opportunity, further solidifying its position as a key player in the region’s development landscape.
Roach also took a moment to acknowledge significant leadership transitions within the Atlanta Regional Commission. In January 2024, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens assumed the mantle of Chair of the ARC Board, succeeding the esteemed Kerry Armstrong. Armstrong, a former Chair of the Gwinnett Chamber Board of Directors, concluded his tenure at the end of 2023, leaving behind a legacy of exemplary service and dedication to regional progress.
The On Topic Luncheon provided an invaluable platform for over 180 Gwinnett Chamber members, business leaders, and community stakeholders to gain insights into the state of the region and the strategic initiatives driving its future trajectory.
