The Gwinnett Chamber recently held its Candidates Forum series for Gwinnett County Board of Education Districts 1, 3, and 5. Candidates who qualified through the Georgia Secretary of State’s office were invited to share their vision for the county’s public school system and expand on key issues on public education as it relates to business.

Leroy Ranel, Rachel Stone, and incumbent Karen Watkins participated in the forum for District 1. Domonique Cooper, Yanin Cortez, Steve Gasper, and Shana White participated in the forum for District 3, an open seat as current board member, Dr. Mary Kay Murphy announced she will not seek re-election. Incumbent Dr. Tarece Johnson-Morgan was the only available candidate for the District 5 forum.

Gwinnett County Public Schools remains the largest public school system in Georgia and 11th largest in the nation with over 180,000 students. Gwinnett is home to 11 STEM/STEAM certified schools, 7 career and college academies, and the state’s top-ranked public high school, Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology.
