The Gwinnett Chamber’s On Topic State of the Schools Luncheon, presented by Porter Steel, took place at the Gas South District with over 220 business and community leaders. Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), addressed the group, offering insights into the school district’s past achievements, present status, and future goals.

GCPS, the largest employer in Gwinnett with more than 24,000 benefit-eligible employees, educates 182,000 students across 142 schools, making it the 11th largest school district in the U.S. Dr. Watts emphasized the district’s commitment to its students, noting that 76% of graduates plan to pursue higher education and 68% of students receive free or reduced lunch. The district operates with a $3.2 billion annual budget, transports 131,000 students daily, and boasts fully staffed teaching and transportation teams.

Dr. Watts outlined the district’s strategic plan, centered on empathy, equity, effectiveness, and excellence, with a focus on safety, security, and adapting to meet student needs. He also highlighted the district’s emphasis on fostering literacy, the importance of AI in education, and the development of future-ready students through whole-learner education.

The Gwinnett Chamber’s On Topic Luncheons provide business and community leaders with valuable insights from key figures on issues that impact the region. Join us next month on October 16 at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast for the On Topic: Congressional Luncheon featuring Congressman Andrew Clyde and Congresswoman Lucy McBath.
